In my job I find myself reading and watching a lot of business news throughout the day, everyday. It's a bad habit. Too much of this stuff can create fear and hysteria which causes a further contraction of the economy. A great president once warned the nation to be careful of "fear itself". We know that the only way out of this is to go back to business as usual.

I read a consumer survey the other day which found that, based on news reports, people believe that it is virtually impossible to obtain financing for a vehicle purchase.  NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!!   Most smaller banks and the credit unions we represent have hardly missed a beat during the economic downturn. They have plenty of money to lend and their buying policies are still as strong as ever.

Lease vs. Purchase

Whether you lease or purchase a new car, you must decide which fits your situation best. When you purchase a car, you pay for the whole vehicle. You will usually make a down payment, pay the sales taxes in cash, or roll these taxes into your auto loan and pay an interest rate. You usually will make your first payment thirty to forty-five days after you sign your contract. This option is great if you like to keep your cars for a long period of time and have a need to put unlimited miles on the vehicle.

When you lease, you are paying only for what you use. You do not necessarily have to make a down payment. You typically only pay sales tax on your monthly payments, and are charged with a money factor that is similar to an interest rate on a loan. You make your first payment at the time you sign your contract.

Loan payments contribute to the eventual ownership of a vehicle, while lease payments apply only to the short-term use of a car.

Owning a lease vehicle is possible if purchased outright after the lease period ends.

Three important factors - adjusted capitalized cost, residual value and the money factor - determine the monthly rate of a lease.

Lease agreements usually limit mileage from 12,000 to 15,000 miles annually. Beyond these figures, fees in the range of $0.10 to $0.25 per mile begin to accumulate.
